First the bad news, the cost of raising a child has risen 40% since the turn of the century.

Segment 1: The Cost of Raising a Kid
CNN Money estimates that the cost of kids has risen 40% in last 10 years. Of the mix, nationally, housing represents about 1/3 of the overall cost. The drivers of the rise is Food and Gas prices however beyond those staples, Health Care rose 56% over that period. To make matters worse for everyone, median household income fell 7%.
A quick way to check the estimate for your region and income is the BabyCenter Cost Calculator.
BabyCenter puts the cost for raising a kid from birth to 17 at $287k for incomes below $60k or $510,000 for incomes above $100k. Both include $105k for private college.
The May 20, 2012 60 Minutes report on the cost of college doesn’t paint a pretty picture of costs beyond the age of 17.
